Donkey Kong 64 is a 3D action-adventure platformer game developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It is a follow-up to the original Donkey Kong trilogy for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In the game, Donkey Kong and his friends go on an adventure to stop King K. Rool from using his doomsday device, the Blast-o-Matic, to destroy Kong Isle.
The game features a single player adventure mode and a multi-player Kong Battle mode.
As Donkey Kong, the player explores the themed levels of an island to collect items and rescue his kidnapped friends from King K. Rool. The player completes minigames and puzzles as five playable Kong characters—each with its own special abilities—to receive bananas and other collectibles.
Donkey Kong 64 is the first and only 3D platformer game in the Donkey Kong franchise. It is the first Nintendo 64 title that requires the Expansion Pak.
